Blessings Upon Lighting

Before lighting the candles we say the blessings:

Baruch atah Ado-nai E-lo-hei-nu melech ha’Olam, asher kiddeshanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu l’hadlik ner Hanukkah.

[Blessed are You, L-rd our G‑d, King of the universe, Who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to light the Hanukkah light.]

Baruch atah Ado-nai E-lo-hei-nu melech ha’Olam, she’asa nissim l’avoteinu, b’yamim hahem b’zman hazeh.

[Blessed are You, L-rd our G‑d, King of the universe, Who wrought miracles for our fathers in those days at this time.]

On the first night (or when the candles are lit for the first time in the year)

Baruch atah Ado-nai E-lo-hei-nu melech ha’Olam, sheheheyanu vekiyemanu vehigiyanu lazman hazeh.

[Blessed are You, L-rd our G‑d, King of the universe, Who has given us life and sustained us and brought us to this time.]

After lighting we say:

Hanerot halalu anu madlikin, al hatteshu’ot, ve’al hannisim, ve’al hannifla’ot, she’asita la’avoteinu bayamim hahem bazz’man hazzeh, al-yedei cohaneicha hakkedoshim. Vechol shemonat yemei Hanukkah hannerot hahalu kodesh hem, ve’ein lanu reshut le-hish-tamesh bahem, elah lir’otam bilvad, k’dei lehodot u’lehallel leshimcha haggadol, al nisecha ve’al nifle’oteicha ve’al yeshu’oteicha.

[We light these candles, for the rescue, and for the miracles, and for the wonders that You performed for our forefathers in those days at this season, through Your holy Cohanim. And all the eight days of Hanukkah, these candles are holy, and we have no permission to use them, but only to look at them, in order to give thanks and praise to Your great Name, for Your miracles, and for Your wonders and for Your rescue.]
